Soraya Martinez Ferrada to Invest $100 Million in Emergency Shelters

Ensemble Montréal Leader and mayoral candidate for the metropolis, Soraya Martinez Ferrada, has announced a major investment in emergency housing resources.

A total of $100 million will be allocated for the acquisition and renovation of buildings to develop new small-scale emergency shelters across the city.

Work will be carried out in collaboration with the Tactical Homelessness Intervention Group (GITI), which Ensemble Montréal has committed to creating, to identify the most suitable locations and best practices for implementation.

This investment builds on previously announced commitments to:

  • Develop at least 2,000 transitional and permanent housing units with psychosocial support during a first mandate;
  • Invest $120 million to support frontline community organizations and outreach workers;
  • Prevent housing loss through microloans for vulnerable tenants;
  • Create a housing bank for households at risk of homelessness;
  • Coordinate all partners’ actions through a Tactical Homelessness Intervention Group;
  • Double the SPVM’s mixed teams (police and social workers);
  • Improve safety and transparency of police interventions through the use of body cameras and street cameras.

“Homelessness is not a choice; it’s a reality no society can afford to ignore. It demands a collective response — only together can we build lasting and humane solutions.”
