Soraya Martinez Ferrada Will Establish a Cleanliness Standard in Montreal

Montreal, July 18, 2025 – Mayoral candidate for the metropolis and leader of Ensemble Montréal, Soraya Martinez Ferrada,  is committed to delivering a clean, welcoming and vibrant city to the Montreal community. At a press conference Friday morning in Côte-des-Neiges–Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, she presented concrete measures to tackle filth head-on, put an end to the laissez-faire attitude, and give Montrealers back a city they can be proud of.

In addition to fulfilling her responsibilities as an administration and deploying resources proportional to the needs, she will ensure that each borough reflects this ambition by establishing a single cleanliness standard across the entire metropolis. The boroughs of Saint-Laurent and Outremont, recognized for their best practices, will serve as models to inspire a genuine cultural change throughout Montreal.

Quality Service for All Montrealers

Under the leadership of Soraya Martinez Ferrada and the Ensemble Montréal team, cleanliness will be restored as a central priority and mission of the City of Montreal. Among the measures to be implemented :

  • Review the spacing of garbage collection, particularly in Mercier-Hochelaga-Maisonneuve and Côte-des-Neiges-Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, which have implemented it, and in Villeray-Saint-Michel-Parc-Extension, which is currently studying it, to ensure that it does not have an impact on citizens’ quality of life;

  • The designation of a dedicated cleanliness responsible within the executive committee who will be responsible for establishing a cleanliness standard in collaboration with all boroughs;

  • The establishment of a cleanliness focal point within the Table of Mayors recently announced by Ms. Martinez Ferrada.

“The current situation is contradictory: efforts are being made to green the city, yet the tree pits are filled with garbage. Our goal is to provide the same quality of service to all citizens, regardless of their neighborhood. As mayor, I will take responsibility to ensure that every borough reflects our ambition to offer a clean, welcoming, and vibrant city to Montrealers,” said Soraya Martinez Ferrada, mayoral candidate and leader of Ensemble Montréal.

“The Projet Montréal administration in Côte-des-Neiges—Notre-Dame-de-Grâce deployed composting collections in buildings with 9 units and more without providing all the necessary tools to the organization responsible for ensuring post-implementation follow-up, reports demonstrate. We need much better citizen support, otherwise we end up with cleanliness issues like we currently have,” stated Ensemble Montréal’s cleanliness spokesperson and City councillor for the Darlington district, Stephanie Valenzuela.

“Unlike others, our team refuses to be defeatist in the face of cleanliness issues. In Outremont, we tackled the problem from the moment we took office. We changed our culture, supported people, and motivated them to get involved by providing tools and leading by example. The result: complaints about cleanliness have decreased by 60% since 2022. Changing mindsets is possible when it becomes a priority,” emphasized Caroline Braun, mayoral candidate for Outremont and current borough councillor for the Jeanne-Sauvé district.

“It is a great pride for Saint-Laurent to be recognized as a forward-thinking borough in terms of environment and sustainable development. This is the result of long-term work. We did not impose measures on citizens; we supported them and worked with them throughout the process. This is the expertise I wish to bring to the administration that will be led by Soraya,” emphasized Alan DeSousa, mayor of Saint-Laurent.
